Short Film

Further

For the Vancouver Film School Classical Animation program, students have to produce a short animated film before graduating.

"Further" is the film I conceptualized, animated, composited and edited.

I chose the concept I thought would work best in order to showcase my background design and painting skills, as well as show my love of design and all the great concept artists and filmmakers that inspire me.

I wanted to produce a style that was stylized but still realistic, as well as explore different ways of pushing myself and evolving my habilities. My biggest inspirations for this project were the films Akira, Star Wars, The Thing and the works of Moebius.

While most of other students films focused on shorter, more animation oriented works with very limited backgrounds, I chose to produce a longer film with multiple backgrounds. As so, on top of storyboarding, animating and compositing my film all while l was still taking classes, I produced over 30 fully painted backgrounds in the span of 3 months.

I felt quite accomplished when I not only managed to successfully finish my film, but that I finished well before many of my other peers.

During this year at VFS, I learned to develop skills people often overlook, such as time-management, discipline and perseverance.

I also learned how much better I work in a communal environment, alongside colleagues I respect and that inspire me.

Working on this film was a one in a lifetime experience. The lessons I learned from it I hope will keep guiding my art to further success and I can't wait to learn even more from any future projects.
